My knowledge about linux is zero an i need a way to make a checkdisk and repair of the ext2 system on the box, no raid-array

What symptoms are you seeing that makes you think your ext2 filesystem needs a "checkdisk" and "repair" run?

there are some rar-files, i can not delete and when i open they seem partually corrupted.
Some days before they were ok

Unfortunately the "check disk" web page was removed by D-Link with the v1.03 firmware.
There is a way to run a "check disk" manually, but it will require some knowledge of Linux.

The first thing you will need to do is install Fonz's funplug http://dns323.kood.org/howto:fun_plug
It would also help if you would read relevant pages on the wiki, starting with http://dns323.kood.org/information:beginner_s_faq

The "check disk" utility in Linux is called 'e2fsck'. This is located in /usr/bin/e2fsck for the D-Link firmware,
and there is a 'fsck' in /mnt/HD_a2/fun_plug.d/bin/fsck that comes with the Fonz's funplug.

I have never attempted to run either program on my DNS-323, so I have no personal knowledge of a
successful procedure, but there are other posters on this forum that have tired it. Perhaps they could
respond with their experiences.

There are no articles on the wiki about fsck, but there are several threads in the forum, if you search for 'fsck'

Just a note of caution: With any hard disk manipulations, you run the risk of losing your data,
so be sure to have a BACKUP of your data, before attempting any disk repair process.

Don't do an fsck with a mounted disk or you will loose date!

could you just change back to the old 1.02 firmware that permits checkdisk? Once complete go forward to the 1.03 firmware. No Linux knowledge required.
I have switched between 1.02 and 1.03 and back a few times, but never actually used the checkdisk.
As long as you have ext2 you wont need to refomat. Backup data before trying!

fsck was removed for a reason from the DNS-323 firmware.. Ie it didn't unmount the volumes before running, which is a really bad thing if something needs fixing..

I thought the reason was because of ext3 and journaling issues that it was removed.

Well, if it was just because of ext3, there would have been no reason to remove it once the ext3 support was removed from the DNS..

I used the built in fsck to try and repair errors on an ext2 HDD, resulting in an amber "light of death" for that HDD. A complete reformat was required to make the DNS work again..

what about unmounting the hd via telnet then running fsck... then it will already be unmounted... still issues with fsck?

try to remove the files from the command prompt, through telnet, when you have installed fonz' fun_plug. maybe it is just a matter of forked access rights? it has been known to occur sometimes, for no particular reason.

you could try ftp:ing to the dns and see if the rwx-stuff is set correctly.

you never know

What set of syntax or orders are available with telnet, where can i see this?
if i have installed the fonz'fun_plug, how can i remove. i know, it is not necessary, but i have tried it via windows explorer on the net-drive, but this failed...
