Swedish characters when using samba share from linux

Hi,
I get weird characters when I mount the DNS-323 samba share in linux.
I use (in /etc/fstab)
//<IP>/Volume_1 /mnt/samba         cifs       auto,guest,iocharset=utf8,setuids,uid=*****,gid=users,dir_mode=0777,file_mode=0777,rw 0 0

But instead of åäö I get some kind of ?? combinations.
Does anyone have a solution to this?

You may have to change the language setting to "Western European". See this post concerning Japanese characters: http://dns323.kood.org/forum/t526-japan … names.html

I am experiencing the same problems when attempting to permanently mount DNS 323 via fstab in Ubuntu. I run the DNS 323 with firmware version 1.04 (from Dlink's russian site). I have tried iocharset=utf8 etc but with no success. Both smbfs and cifs.

However when I access the nas through Nautilus as a windows share the file names remain intact. I need to mount the nas for backup purposes and the windows share through Nautilus won't suffice.

Do I need to configure the smb.conf file in the Ubuntu box?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Re: Swedish characters when using samba share from linux

It is because the DNS is not using UTF8 :-(

You will need to use the EasySearch util and assign the "West Europe" locale.

I.e. sv_SE.ISO-8859-15

And use that as charset.

Thanks for your quick reply!

Is there no other way other than resorting to a Windows computer and installing the software?

To set the locale you have to run EasySearch. It might work under wine haven't tried...

Tack!

I will do that on an older dual boot box tomorrow.

Re: Swedish characters when using samba share from linux

Languange settings cannot be changed in EasySearch using 1.04. This could only be done downgrading firmware to 1.03 which I didn't like. I presume 1.04 supports UTF8 after all(?). So I dropped that alternative and tried to get it right with 1.04 without using EasySearch.

Finally I got the mount working with the following line in fstab:

\\********\Volume_1    /media/nas    cifs   user,defaults,gid=users,rw,lfs,iocharset=utf8    0    0

Filenames with å,ä,ö remain intact even after a reboot and remount! All I have left is password protection via credentials.

Thanks for your input frodo.

Re: Swedish characters when using samba share from linux

1.04 is using Samba 3 and has support for UTF. Haven't tried it myself yet though ....

Sorry for missleading you. Good though that we finally have UTF in the box!!
