Hi all
My DNS-323 has been up and running for about a month now, but looking to expand its capabilites.
I'm a PC geek, but a Linux newbie.
I know the DNS-323 is ARM cpu based, and there is a version of TwonkyMedia for the ARM cpu. Has anyone looked at tweaking this for the 323??
I really want to connect this to other things. I have a UPNP WiFi radio that has trouble with the current DNS firmware server for MP3s, also an XBOX360 which cannot see it. I have heard good things about TwonkyMedia, and the DNS-323 is a topic in Twonkys forum, but with no replies.
Currently running JBOD 500GB, and 320GB

Took a quick lookse at TwonkyVisions site and my first question would be; is there an open source (source would be nice for compilation) version available? Since I can only find info about how to buy a licens and that page says following:
You may use the downloaded software for evaluation purposes without any charge for a period of 30 days. You may not use it past the 30-day trial limit without paying TwonkyVision GmbH for a license fee. Use of this product without paying after the 30-day trial period is in violation of German and international copyright laws. You will be prompted to enter the registration information when the 30-day trial period expires.
There are actually also one thread within the Twonky forum about porting.

Yes, I believe Twonky supports ARM. I'm looking to install it, but just haven't gotten around to trying to.

I bought the Twonkymedia license last year so have access to most of the stuff. It is a closed source and comes pre compiled.
The ARM versions fail to launch- bigendian branch is for DNS323- it dies with syntax errors.
Twonkymedia would have to release a version specifically compiled for dns323 but I think that the market is still too small for them to be bothered.

Hello skydreamer,
Which version of twonky did you try ?
How to know if the DNS is big endian or little endian ?

Big endian- trial and error, it ran at least to some sort of failure, small endian would not launch at all.

Hi,
I wanted to install Twonkymedia Server to serve multimedia content.
I had read in the Twonky Forum, that the DNS-323 won't be supported as it uses uClibc 0.9.26.
Twonkymedia needs uClibc 0.9.28.
Now I am little bit confused since uclibc-toolchain-src-20040609.tar.gz contains the 0.9.28 ?
Is this correct ?
If I want to update the uclibc, which applikations have to recompile ?
Anyone knows all which uses the uclibc ?
Thanks

I remember reading somewhere that it usees 0.9.26 also... but then like you, I noticed 0.9.28 in the toolchain..
Do you remember where you saw that it was 0.9.26?
Even the /lib directory on the device itself seems to suggest its 0.9.28..

Are we sure it doesn't work? I got the little edian version to run at least.
First obstacle was 'dirname' wasn't found when running the startup script.
busybox3 has dirname compiled in, so just create a symlink

# dirname
BusyBox v1.2.1 (2006.10.30-10:27+0000) multi-call binary
Usage: dirname FILENAME

I don't know how to test this, but it appears to work.
The file I used was twonkymedia-armel-uclibc-0.9.28.zip, downloaded from the link in the post a few posts above this one.
Edit:
I was able to bring up the webpage, http://192.168.254.5:9000/setup.htm
It's scanning my music now.
Sorry, I've never used Twonky before but I was curious... guess I'll have to figure out what this is now!
'ps' shows the twonky processes doing things... fun fun.

Great work, tobyg!
It is indeed working, and playing right now on my PC!
Unfortunately the TMS is fully compatible only with IE, for Firefox look for a modified .js playback script on the twonky forum, which also improves IE playback.
I am a bit concerned about the various instances of twonky media server running in memory, this is how it looks on a proper system (FC5):
2382 ? 00:00:00 twonkymedia
2383 ? 01:40:13 twonkymediaserv
....
23181 ? 00:00:02 file-scanner <defunct>
23182 ? 00:00:00 shoutcast-impor <defunct>
I suppose that only long term testing will reveal how stable is this solution, so far so good.
Is not it waste of money to run TMS on a RAID1? ;-)

Yeah I had to kill mine. I tried to have it scan my 90,000+ MP3's and it got REAL slow around the 50,000 mark... and it was just killing my box, using way too much ram. The built in iTunes server uses a lot of ram and takes about 20 minutes to rescan everything, but it doesn't use nearly as much... this thing was going for hours and only got to 50,000. Not good.
Anyway, I may try it out again with a smaller subset and possibly videos, but not music.
oh, and I didn't really do anything... I just ran it.

Has anyone done any further testing with TMS?
I'm looking for a NAS solution that I can use as a media server with the xbox 360.
I really like the DNS-323 but before buying I'd like to know if TMS can be run successfully.
Any chance someone can add what they have done so far to the wiki?
Cheers
L.

Hi,
I just noticed TwonkyVision has a version for the DNS-323. This must be part of
the new 4.2 verson.

I downloaded and installed Twonkymedia trial and so far it works much better than the D-Link UPnP AV server. All you need to do is fun_plug your box for telnet and run the NAS installer supplied with the Twonkymedia download package. I had it running in less than 10 minutes and no problems so far.
I use a D-Link DSM-320 media player with a wired ethernet connection. Using Twonkymedia, music playlists actually work and video streams play much better. The D-Link UPnP AV server would not recognize any of my .m3u playlists or would not play video streams without multiple skips and pauses.
If all goes well, I'll pay for a licensed version after my 30-day trial is up.
Has anyone else tried this yet or run into any problems?

I installed the Twonkyvision twonkymedia server on my DNS-323 and it's all working great. I have noticed that my DSM-320 has frozen up a couple of times and I need to reboot it, but MP4 playback now works. I also found a workaround so the trial always remains at 30 days left.

Hi - have installed Twonky using NASSetup.exe - all completed ok
However when i try to access the config page (http://xxx.xxx.x.x:9000/configpage/index.html) i get Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage.
How do i confirm Twonky is running and how do i get to the config page?
Thanx,
gbrugg

I've had the same result as gbrugg - the DNS323 installer for TwonkyMedia worked fine and reports all of it's hard work, but the web config page doesn't load. I also don't see any twonky related processes running, and i don't even see any twonky files on the DNS... strange.
any ideas? i'm eager to try this out with the new PS3 1.80 firmware (which supports media servers, but I haven't had any luck with the dlink UPnP AV server).

TwonkyMedia works great with the PS3 on FW1.8
It has no problems finding all my music, and photos, and videos. (Limitations with PS3 FW1.8 allow only MPEG2 videos to stream over the network)
Had no problems installing mine, and appears on the default "http://192.168.1.110:9000/configpage/index.html" from my main PC.
I have recently tried install the fan_speed fun plugs elsewhere in thsi wiki, with a custom plug, upon a reboot of the 323 both telnet and Twonky stopped working.
If you have a custom Fan_Speed plug, disable for now and see if Twonky will work, trusting a fix will be discovered by someone a lot more clever than me.

great, but i still can't get it working... i have no other custom fun_plug's, in fact all I do is start telnet.
i'm mostly concerned with Twonky's NAS Setup app printing out all this info about a successful install, but then not seeing any evidence of it's work at all (no files on disk). i'll ask Twonky's support as well...

On installing, all that was requested was the IP address of the DNS-323, from then it installed.
There is now a folder called "twonky" in the root directory of my first drive, and it has added a "starttwonky.sh" script.
As there not there, maybe best asking twonky for help.
I know you've tried many times, but just being obvious, i expect you put in the correct IP address for your DNS-323 when asked during installation.

yup, i put in the correct IP address. one difference is that I could not just install after that with a blank user/pw. I had to enter a username/pw (the same for the DNS-323 web config) - what user/pw did you use? blank?
and then I saw output in the NASsetup app that looks like it was uninstalling, installing, etc. - everything looked great. But afterwards I see no files on the DNS.
I'm waiting for a reply from twonky support...
Offline
I didn't need any username or password.
Final guess : Check the DNS-323 setup, and ensure that 'network access' is permitted for the root directory to "All accounts" and "Read/Write" access
