hi all,
just advising that for those who want to connect to the 360 on its own will not work and which has been verified by DLink (due to my help desk ticket i raised 4 weeks ago).
help desk advise that this issue has been escalated, however, they are not promising anything. eg, they do not promise it will be a feature / bonus in the new 1.04 firmware release (this release was meant to fix international characters).
according to help desk, MS are using a proprietary protocol to look for streaming servers (DNLA??) of which the 323 does not support at this time.
it also seems that the Playstation 3 (they use a different protocol) users are in the same boat as the 360
just thought i would inform you of this so future customers do not get expectations to high
cheers

If this was taken from my original post I think you may have misread some things.
They are both using UPNP AV ( The Xbox360 and the Playstation 3). Just because the Playstation 3 recognizes the DNS-323 and the Xbox 360 does not means that the Xbox 360 is looking for a different UPNP AV identifier. The protocol for transfering the data is the same but the "HEY IM OVER HERE" signal is being lost. We will work to improve this issue and like you said no promises as of yet until we can determine what the issue is.

Here's hoping they get it working. I'd really like to take advantage of the 323/360 combination; it means I don't have to have a PC running all the time to access our networked media. Thanks for the update, Dlink.

Yes this would pursuade me to buy a xbox if I could use the new divx streaming facility in it.

Doesn't the 360 work if you install the twonky media server software on the 323?

It would be nice not to have to do that.

Yes, but it's additional memory used and an added cost. (I did note that version 4.00 on my other NAS device keeps working in trail mode as long as the server reboots before the month is up. Sort of resets the counter.)

The DNS-323 does not work with the Xbox360, not because it is not compatible with UPnP BUT because the XBox360 is looking for a MS service in the UPnP which the DNS-323 does not have.
<service>
<serviceType>urn:microsoft.com:service:X_MS_MediaReceiverRegistrar:1</serviceType>
<serviceId>urn:microsoft.com:serviceId:X_MS_MediaReceiverRegistrar</serviceId>
<SCPDURL>/UPnP_AV_X_MS_MediaReceiverRegistrar_1.0.xml</SCPDURL>
<controlURL>/upnp/control/x_ms_mediareceiverregistrar</controlURL>
<eventSubURL>/upnp/event/x_ms_mediareceiverregistrar</eventSubURL>
</service>
This X_MS_MediaReceiverRegistrar is required by the XBox and is for the purpose of DRM (Digital Rights Management), to check if a file is "OK" to play.
This is required by the XBox360 before it will display the MediaServer.
I am not sure if D-Link want to add an "emulator" for the X_MS_MediaReceiverRegistrar? Obviously none of the content on the D-Link would be MS DRM'd.
I suppose i could add to the latest firmware if there was demand? It is a simple code and can be added to the upnp server in a fairly straight forward and safe manner.

If you have a simple solution for thsi that would be great. Twonky works fine. I set it up on the 323 over the weekend and with the new MS dashboard update only a handful or older Divx aren't working. (So far only 6 of my divx are older than version 5...)
The included AV server only supports one folder to watch, I need at least two so Twonky is up until I have the time to see what is required to get two folders, one on each drive, included as source to stream.
I must say that when I was testing Twonky on my HPMediavault it was okay...but the 360 wouldn't show top level folders divided into groups, just the files or bottom level folders. With the last dashboard update it's improved greatly.

Yea I use Twonky and it works great at streaming pics, music and Movies (ya for Divx support) to both of my 360s. I just off standard media server on the DNS-323 and enjoy the streaming....
