What's new:
-kernel 2.6.36.2, nfs-utils back to version 1.2.1
-terse report from vaughnd12 confirms that rev-A1 boards are now working.
   (tanks to Philster76 and KRH for initial testing)
-partitioning and filesystem web pages spliced and RAID web page created
-Filesystems, RAID, and Partitioner web pages are now simpler
-Disk Partitioner and Wizard now unconditionally aligns partitions on 4K boundaries
-Disk Partitioner now has an advanced mode
-Directory Browser web page with enhanced (but slow) browsing and
   with directory copy/cut/move/create/delete capabilities
-Directory Ownership and Access Permissions web page
-backup support and Backup Manager administering web pages (preliminary)
   backups local directories and directories mounted by NFS/CIFS
-Remote syslog support and administering web pages (contribution from Augusto Bott)
-Firmware updater web page now enables recovering original vendor's settings from backup
   (untested if effective, there are some differences between backup and original)
-Status web page only shows what exists
-Spaces allowed in paths in /etc/fstab and /etc/exports (use\040as\040space)
   and processed by smb and nfs web pages. NFS complains but works.
   mounts by filesystem labels still replace spaces with underscores.
-Speed improvement in web pages that deals with disk
-Countless improvements and bug fixes.

-Users with an Alt-F flashed box should use the *TryIt* option in the Firmware Updater
web page before actually flashing it, as incompatibilities might happen. Its Beta!

-There are a few identified incompatibilities between B5 and B6. If you have only slightly
changed settings, the recommended procedure is to clear settings before starting using.
If you don’t' want to clean settings, the file Alt-F_B5_to_B6.fix script tries to fixes them.
Before using or flashing Alt-F-01.B6, telnet/ssh the box, and execute the script.
After doing it don't save settings until start using B6. Other incompatibilities might arise.

I will now start updating disk-installable packages and fix 0.1B6 reported bugs.
No more features are expected in the base firmware, but (micro)emacs and ncurses
will be removed and turned into packages.

Hopefully the next release will be 0.1

-Are you running a flashed B5?
In the web pages go to System->Firmware, upload the Alt-F-0.1B6.bin and hit the *tryIt* button. Try it for a while. Did B6 work fine? Go again to System->Firmware, upload Alt-F-0.1B6.bin again and hit the *FlashIt* button. But keep reading.

-Or are you running the "reloaded" B5?
Drop the Alt-F-0.1B6.tar file in the same directory where the fun_plug is and reboot the box. But keep reading.

There is a script, Alt-F_B5_to_B6.fix, that can be run to smooth the upgrade process, but it has to be used while still using B5: download it to the box, say to /mnt/sda3, then telnet/ssh the box and execute it, typing at the command line

sh /mnt/sda3/Alt-F_B5_to_B6.fix

Write down any message that it produces, if any.
The scripts success depends on how much modifications you have done to the system configuration, as it assumes a standard setup with only with small modifications.
If the script does not succeed the only consequences are that you will have to do some adjustments manually afterward.

You mean, you are "reloading" Alt-F and you are talking of the the directory named "alt-f" right? (*)

No. You don't need to remove neither the "alt-f" directory nor the existing fun_plug file. Just put there the new Alt-F-0.1B6.tar file.
And if you latter want to go back to B5, just drop there the Alt-F-0.1B5.tar file.

When the fun_plug script detects a new Alt-F-*.tar it extracts it to a directory named "alt-f", overriding its contents.
But I have not tried it myself, and I don't know what the vendors tar exactly does.

(*)-You have to give exact details about your present situation and what you intent to do, or else you risk a wrong answer

I am a Linux noob, just flashed (Not reloaded) my B1 with Alt-F-0.1B6, to use external storage with the USB port is under which option? or which package should I need to install prior?

Possible or not to shut down the PC during the data transmission in between the B1 and external storage through USB port?

Looks like not enough free memory, pretty standard issue.

You need to make sure nothing is running on the box. This means:

firmware services like itunes server, unpnp etc
add-ons like bonjour or firefly or torrent
ffp packages like errr any of them, ssh even, (leave telnet just in case),

then reboot and try again.

Now i can buy a third 1,5tb disk and convert to a raid5, which will give me 3tb for 60€. Without your firmware i would have paid much more

Your firmware made that possible

( and, i feel much more safe about my data because i can use ssh to look what the device does. )

i was thinking about putting alt-f firmware on my nas. cause original firmware has been corrupted or something

couple questions

seen this already answered but want to make sure cause of importance. by running alt-f over top of original firmware, i will NOT lose data on disk yes???

does alt-f come with a DLNA server installed? or do i need to install? and if so...how? i read about creating packages but had no idea how to

and with alt-f can i install other packages of my choice? like audio streaming services

Running alt-f won't erase data on the disk. However in theory it could brick your box perhaps. I would suggest getting it working in the re-loaded fashion first to check if all is ok. (anyone want to correct me on that advice?)

miniDLNA is one of the alt-f packages. It can easily be installed via the web admin pages. However it's not working for me in B6 out of the box, so I think it needs a little bit of tweaking by Joao (hopefully back shortly). I have had it working in B5 so I would expect all will be ok with it in the near future.

Alt-f supplies a number of built in packages (not all working currently) plus the ability to easily install ffp packages via the web admin pages, so there are a lot of options. Adding your own which are not currently included is a rather more serious task...beyond my ability for example.

Worth popping in to the discussion forums on the alt-f site.

I'm liking the ext4 options.. but how do I get sabnzbd to run??
Or better said how do I get DEBNAS to boot???

Apparently there isn't any sabnzbd version for ffp or alt-f modules.

I dont want to brick my box. so whats the best way to bring up debnas after I installed alt-f ?

You only need to plug the external usb storage to the box usb back connector, be it a disk or a pen, and it will be detected and mounted. You can see it in the status page and manipulate it, if you want to, under any of the disk menu entry.
You can also browse and manipulated its directories using the Setup->Directories menu entry

If you don't see the external usb device, take a look at the bottom of System->Utilities->View Logs->Kernel log and post it.

Yes, you can poweroff the PC, the dns is a computer in its own.

But you have to initiate the process that you want to happen.
What do you want to do? Do you want to to do backups from the internal disk to the usb disk?
If that is what you want, go to Services->System->Backup->Configure and add an entry.
Your external usb disk has to be powered up at the schedule backup time.

No, Alt-F will not touch your disks data unless you tell it to do so.

But Alt-F will do a filesystem check (fsck) on your filesystems, and will try to correct any inconsistencies it finds.
This is the standard procedure on *any* linux machine.
If fsck can't automatically fix the inconsistencies, the filesystem will be mounted read-only.

But to not throw the dust under the rug, the shipped COPYING file, which is GPL, says:

That said, no user has untill now complained of any data loss.

Yes, there are media server packages for you to download and install using the web interface. Some of them are not fully working, but I'm working on that.

Just to say that bricking can only occur when flashing Alt-F, not when "reloading" it.

And when you flash Alt-F you are taking the same risk as when you upgrade the vendor's firmware.

I have (not yet?) created a Debian distro Alt-F package

debnas installation relies on the fun_plug script being run by the vendors firmware at startup.
Alt-F does not runs any fun_plug script file, so you have to run it manually.
But debnas also assumes disk to be mounted at /mnt/HD_A2, which Alt-F does not.
Perhaps you could create a link from /mnt/sda2 to /mnt/HD_A2?

I'm afraid that this subject is out of Alt-F scope.

I've edited the fun_plug script but it won't boot
I can make a symlink to that dir but how can I run it manually?
Edit: Ah I think I know what u mean but the fun_plug script from DEBNAS only untars it to the root of the disk, so then it expects the firmware to boot it or what is the expected behaviour?

i had to recover with serial cable..

original firmware successfully loading(1.08,1.09), but b6 from it:

The uploaded file was not accepted by the DNS-323. Please return to the previous page and select a valid upgrade file.

and with serial cable kermit protocol getting error by uploading ramdisk.

Assign a label to the filesystem where you want to install DEBNAS, and Alt-F will mount the filesystem by label (but keep reading, it will not work)

Go to Disk->Filesystems and enter HD_a2 in the Label input field, and then "Set Label" in the "FS Operations". The filesystem will be unmounted and remounted, so now you have a filesytem mounted as /mnt/HD_a2, as debnas expects.

Thanks for your detailed message, for the time being I'm going back to original firmware and try DEBNAS.
The main reason I bought the DNS-323 is the usability of SABnzbd. So I can trow out my old power consuming amd2800+ sempron machine.
I don't like the idea of using an old filesystem like ext3. Maybe in the future there will be a way of using SABnzbd on this nice firmware.

ive flashed debian netinstall image first, and dlink original firmware from it using this method:

ive tired install altf b6 once more. kernel flashed sucessfully, but at the end of flashing ramdisk i get not enough flash memory error, and then rebooted and some checksum error

-You have to put files in the Public (RO) by other means, such as ftp. Or drop the files in the Public (RW) and use Setup->Directories to move the files [edited: wrong, directories, not files] to the RO directory.

-What fan speed does the status page indicates?
Or to have its history, go to System->Utilities->System log, and record the fan and speed events.

My fan lower speed is about 1950 RPM, perhaps yours stops at a higher speed?
Go to Services->System->syctrl->configure, read the help page (the (?) icon next to the page title) and play with the settings.

-Do your disks spin down? Again, look at the log. A user also with WD disks has reported that their disks do not spin down, please follow the discussion "disk spin up and spindown" on the Alt-F discussion group http://groups.google.com/group/alt-f/topics
