Re: What SATA hard drives have been tested with the DNS-323?

I've got two Seagate 500GB SATA II 7200RPM 16MB Baracuda 7200.10 (ST3500630AS) drives installed in a JBOD format. no probs here, works like a charm.

Re: What SATA hard drives have been tested with the DNS-323?

Work around for "No Hard drives were detected".

I have had a lot of trouble with my SEAGATE 400GB Barracuda. I've experienced the same situation like some other I’ve read about in this forum. The blue led's where flashing all the time. When I log on to the unit trough the Web GUI I've got "No Hard drives were detected"

My solution to this problem is as following:

1. Insert the hard drives into the DNS-323 and power on.
2. Log in to the Web GUI and verify that "No Hard drives were detected".
3. Push the reset button on the back side of the DNS-323 for ten seconds and wait until the unit is ready again.
4. Log on trough the Web GUI - viola - the disks are now discovered.

If I for some reason have to power down the unit I have to start it in a two phase operation.
1. Power on. No disks are detected - the blue led's is flashing all the time.
2. Log on trough the Web GUI and use "Tools, system, restart" and wait until the unit is ready again.
3. Log on trough the Web GUI - viola - the disks are now discovered.

Re: What SATA hard drives have been tested with the DNS-323?

2 x Western Digital Caviar GP 1TB SATA-II (WD10000CSRTL). Sweet deal from BestBuy at $259.99 each.
Pros: cheaper than competition, green (can spin down to 5400rpm to save power)
Cons: 16MB cache, 5 platters (same as Hitachi but more than Seagate & Samsung), 3-yr warranty

Everything works out of box with 1.02, 1.03 and 1.04b

Since I'm thinking about buying the dns-323 I'm then wondering about what drives does actually works; I seen some thread mentioning that they have had issues with some drives and  I'm aware of that D-link has a support thread as well. But, it would be kind of nice to hear what other drives that has been tested and that you're running with here.

I'm thinking about getting a pair of the Samsung Spinpoint 500gb SATA/300 7200rpm - good choice or not, I don't know. But nice price and 5yr warrant. Open for suggestions here. On the other hands I've been looking at the Western Digital RE2 500gb SATA/300 7200rpm drives that has RAID-specific, time-limited error recovery (TLER).

And while on the topic of how it performs, I'm also curious about the uptime.

I just yesterday installed a DNS-323 with those WD drives (RE2 500Gb) and it's up and running (all as a RAID1 volume).  Mapped ok and have proved I can read and write but not much else yet :-)   Hope that helps.  Seemed like a good reliability/price/performance/capacity disk choice to me.

I have seen a few references to 1.04 rev of the firmware here, but not on the DLINK site etc. Where can I find it, what does it provide over 1.03?

Thanks!

Never mind. Finally got a hit.

Why is it search engines never work until AFTER you've posted a question to a forum?

Re: What SATA hard drives have been tested with the DNS-323?

I am using 2 Seagate Barracuda ES SATA 3.0Gb/s 750-GB Hard Drives Model ST3750640NS in 2 separate DNS-323s.  They were purchased in June 2007.  They are up and working perfectly and I love the 5 year warranty.  I updated to firmware V1.03.

Re: What SATA hard drives have been tested with the DNS-323?

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3500630AS 500GB
and
Samsung 500GB S300 16MB 7200RPM

No problems smile

Working in RAID-1 (Mirrored) mode

The drives are intentionally different - putting two identical drives bought from the same vendor at the same time almost guarantees that both drives are from the same batch - and will probably fail at a similar age (might be short or long term).

I have been caught by this before when 2 * 200Gb SATA drives I was building into a server based mirror failed at 12 hours and 20 hours ... luckily the server wasn't live so data wasn't lost, just the time spent building it and installing software ... and the hassle of getting replacement drives. sad

Re: What SATA hard drives have been tested with the DNS-323?

Seagate 750GB ST3750640NS x 2 in RAID1 here. Had them a few days now, no issues so far. Max temperature seems to be 46°C (max HD operating temp 55). Very happy (and as other posted have mentioned 5 year warranty helps). Noise of DNS323 + drives quiet, quieter than PC, although I do find the spin down noise noticeable and disconcerting!

Don't trust IBM/Hitachi DeathStars after disasters in the past, and recently had a maxtor failure. Only the seagates have been consistently reliable for me, which is why I was prepared to pay a bit more.

I am using 2 Maxtor DiamondMax 500G SATA 16M. I got them because they were cheap. So far no problems

Re: What SATA hard drives have been tested with the DNS-323?

I ran into an issue with my 2 drives, but got it working. They were in a RAID array before I put them into the DNS-323, not freshly formatted, but it should not have mattered. But one of them constantly failed formatting so I put it in an external enclosure and tried to format it, worked on the second try, then worked in the DNS-323.

Re: What SATA hard drives have been tested with the DNS-323?

I've bought the DNS-323 in May 2007 in Germany, together with two 500GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 disks, product code ST3500841AS.

This type of disks is not supported by the DNS-323. They are not recognized after a cold start, the only chance to use them is a hot reboot (possible with firmware starting from 1.03). I sent the DNS even with both disks to D-Link support in Germany - got it back with comment that this issue currently cannot be solved.

P.S. Even under firmware 1.04bxx these disks are not working properly.

Regards, Baltic

Re: What SATA hard drives have been tested with the DNS-323?

Received my first unit yesterday. Was DOA.

Changed it for another, and successfully have it working with 2 x WD WD5000AAKS in RAID-1.

Everything seems OK so far, touch wood...

ps. my unit shipped with 1.03 firmware.

Re: What SATA hard drives have been tested with the DNS-323?

I got two Western Digital Caviar GP 1TB SATA drives (WD10EACS) from Newegg and set them up in a RAID 1 configuration.  Took forever to copy over 800GB of music files (doing it via FTP), but so far everything is working well.  Have ~932GB of usable space with this setup.

I recently upgraded to the 1TB WD10EACS as well. Mine is setup as JBOD though not Raid1. The second drive (Vol2) is used as a backup for the first, I do that manually a couple of times a week.

The transfer from the original 500GB WD5000AAKS drives was taking forever so I connected both old and new drives directly to my Windows XP machine after initially setting up and formatting in the DNS. Using the EXT IFS for Windows software, copied all my data across at full speed (~60MBps?) then transferred the new drives back into the DNS. All worked perfectly.

Excellent idea!  I had thought about just plugging one of the drives into my main computer to transfer all the files up, but I didn't know if the EXT2 format would be recognized, and I didn't take the time to research it more.  I'll definitely keep that IFS software you mentioned in mind for the future.
